Food Protest in the Dutch Republic (1500-1800)

This dissertation investigates the (de)construction of food riots in the Dutch Republic (1500-1800). Through the in-depth analysis of various case-studies, this dissertation examines which (political) meaning archives, contemporary (published) sources, and historical works attributed to food riots and the role of male and female rioters. Comparing the narratives of these diverse source genres provides new insight into the dynamics of archival politics and the political role of ordinary people.
