Book launch ‘Cultural History for a Changing World’ (Bloomsbury, 2026)

On Wednesday 25 March we celebrate the publication of the edited volume Cultural History for a Changing World (edited by Jochen Hung and Willemijn Ruberg, to be published 5 Feb. 2026). This book is a collaboration between the Cultural History group at Utrecht University and a number of international colleagues. Three (former) Huizinga PhD students contributed a chapter as well. In the book, the contributors sketch what a new cultural history may look like, considering the huge changes our world is experiencing, e.g. in regard to climate change, fake news, and decolonization. During the book launch several internationally acclaimed cultural historians, as well as graduate students in cultural history, will participate in a panel discussion on the volume. Huizinga students are invited to join us in the discussion.

Assignment
To earn 1 ECTS, students need to read (the Introduction and at least 4 out of the 5 sections of) the volume Cultural History for a Changing World (a pdf will be sent to them by the course coordinator), prepare a question for the panel discussion, and write a brief reflection in which they critically discuss the relationship between their own research and the cultural historical approach discussed in the book. This reflection should be approximately 1500 words.
