Lecture George J. Severs: Out of the Bars and into the Saunas. Rethinking Public Sexual Health Work during the HIV/AIDS Crisis in Britain

Leicester, a city in the English East Midlands, was among the most active centres of HIV/AIDS activism in the country. This lecture explores the efforts which were employed to reach men who had sex with men in Leicester, especially Black and Asian men. Not only did Black and Asian activists radically rethink how sexual health outreach could function, they also present us with new and more diverse ways of thinking about the history of HIV/AIDS.

George J. Severs is a postdoctoral researcher at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the author of Radical Acts: HIV/AIDS Activism in Late Twentieth-Century England (Bloomsbury, 2024).
