
The History of Experience – A masterclass with Prof. Rob Boddice

The Huizinga History of Emotions Research Network is organizing a masterclass on the History of Experience with Professor Rob Boddice (University of Tampere). The masterclass is intended to bring together researchers whose work builds on theories and methods from the history of experience as it emerged from the history of emotions and the history of the senses and who wish to discuss (part of) their research with the leading expert in the field. The one-day masterclass will open with a lecture by Prof. Boddice followed by a Q&A in the morning and a discussion of participants’ research projects in the afternoon.

About Rob Boddice
Rob Boddice (PhD, FRHistS) is a Senior Research Fellow at the Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX), Tampere University. He has previously held positions at Harvard University, McGill University, the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, and the Freie Universität Berlin. Prof. Boddice has published extensively in the history of medicine, the history of science and the history of emotions. His recent books include Emotion, Sense, Experience, with Mark Smith (Cambridge University Press, 2020), Humane Professions: The Defence of Experimental Medicine, 1876-1914 (Cambridge University Press, 2021), Feeling Dis-Ease in Modern History: Experiencing Medicine and Illness (Bloomsbury, 2022), edited with Bettina Hitzer, and Knowing Pain: A History of Sensation, Emotion and Experience (Polity, 2023). He is currently writing The Power of Belief: a book about the history of the placebo effect (Reaktion, 2026).
