The history and heritage of Queer Bars in the Low Countries, 1920-present
Utrecht University
Supervisors: Willemijn Ruberg and Elwin Hofman
Project start and end date: 1 September 2024 – 31 August 2029
As queer bars globally seem to be disappearing and queer nightlife in general is changing its character, some members of the LGBTQ+ community have started to organise different kinds of heritage initiatives for the bars. More and more people are seeking to document, archive and make accesible the history and memory of these bars. This project delves into the question of why people are seeking to turn queer bars into heritage. The emotional and spatial experience of patrons in the past will be analyzed and related to how people experience these bars in the present. By tracing the emotional and spatial history of these bars it reconciles the fields of history and heritage studies to answer this central research question.
