14.00 – Lezing door Michael Erard: Beyond “mama”
I will discuss some of challenges and opportunities in using diary evidence to track the cultural history of attention to child language, specifically children’s first words. It turns out that salient information is contained in sources outside the traditional child language diary tradition. This is part of a larger project on the linguistic history of first words (by babies) and last words (of the dying), showing how ideas and beliefs attached to these linguistic milestones vary across places and eras.
