Workshop ‘A Historical and Philosophical Perspective on the Relationship Between Creativity and Mental Health’

On 12 May 2026, 14:00-17:00,, Laura Prins, PhD (lecturer & researcher Art History Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam / Utrecht University) and Michal Hubálek, PhD (postdoctoral researcher Philosophy, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen / University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic) organise the workshop ‘A Historical and Philosophical Perspective on the Relationship Between Creativity and Mental Health’ at The New University Building, room NU-4B47, De Boelelaan 1111, Amsterdam.

In this workshop, the alleged idea of a relationship between creativity and mental illness will be discussed. What does it exactly mean? How did this idea historically develop? In addition, specific attention will be paid to Van Gogh: how accurate is the image of him as a suffering genius?

Art historian Laura Prins will give an introductory lecture, followed by a conversation with philosopher Michal Hubálek and discussions with the students.

This workshop is part of a student visit in the Philosophy and Social Sciences program at the University of Hradec Králové. The workshop is open to BA, (R)MA & PhD students of the OSK, but students from other research schools are also welcome. As the official deadline for applying has been set for 20 April 2026, please contact Laura Prins for more info first.
