The Use of Violence in Java’s Eighteenth-Century Wars
Supervisors: Prof.dr. J.J.L. Gommans, Dr. Lennart Bes
My research endeavours to observe the context and rationalisation of the mobilisation of military means in eighteenth-century Java, both by Javanese principalities and the Dutch East India Company, to achieve political ends. The focus is on investigating the commensurability concerning the use of violence in wars (and beyond) through reconstruction and analysis of conflicts from the studied period. I work with both the VOC sources written in Dutch and Javanese historical accounts.
