It is with great sadness that the Huizinga Institute has learned of the passing of our esteemed colleague Professor Willem Frijhoff (1942-2024). Willem Frijhoff played a key role in the rise of cultural history in the Netherlands since the 1980s: in many inspiring books and articles he introduced new concepts and methods. He contributed to a vibrant intellectual culture with his inspiring teaching, his famous séminaires and stimulating support of young talent, and so much more. Willem was one of the driving forces in our research school from its founding, in 1995, and a long-standing member of the Board of Advisors. We are deeply indebted to him for all he meant to the field. An in Memoriam by his former PhD candidate Fred van Lieburg, now Professor of Religious History (VU, Amsterdam) can be found here (in Dutch).
